Mastermind 2.0 is an interactive installation that encourages viewers to play with pendulums to create matching sound and light effects. Mastermind 2.0 is loosely based on Gordon Pask’s, Musicolor, as well as the 1970’s board game, Mastermind. The goal of the installation is to have viewers interact with the pendulums and try to create matching light and sound effects to create a synesthesia like creation. This interaction will develop a conversation between user and machine, as well as between user and user.
The sound and light is created and altered by the amplitude of modulation. This amplitude is measured via a potentiometer which sends the data through to Arduino. This amplitude is then translated into sound via PureData. The pendulums were intended to all have different lengths, and thus create different sounds based on a pentatonic scale. The intended goal for the game is to match colors and thus, match sound and frequency of modulation to create for one harmonic piece.
